The holes for attaching the bows needed to be countersunk so I made some more test pieces and got the microstop set the the right depth.  The material countersunk very easily.

The last picture shows the rough cut for the canopy slide handle and lock piece.  I drilled two holes on each side and used a dremel cutoff wheel at low speed to cut between them.  The slot was made just big enough to get a file through and I filed it out to the final size.
