After I shortened the forward left strap, I reinstalled it. With the fuel tank out, I can actually sit on the floor under the glare shield without too much problem. After installing the strap I connected the front and back straps held as loosely as possible. I was then able to reinstall the fuel tank with some hard pushes.

I then tightened up the straps, which can be seen in the last two pictures.
