When you are done crimping you check for continuity. This is called ringing out the connection because the best tool for the job will make a sound when you touch a lead to both ends of a wire with good continuity. This instrument also displays open or short on the display. Short is good when you connect the leads to two ends that should be continuous.  I test before I put the wires in the shell and then I test again checking the pin is in the right position in the shell.  I also test every wire against all the other wires to make sure I haven’t shorted two wires together.
