And what’s this? It’s the first oil change.  The procedure is to fill the engine with 3 quarts – which is more than the VW takes – and then turn the engine over with the starter until you get an oil pressure reading.  No fuel or ignition, just the starter.  This proves the oil pump is working and fills the oil cooler.

Then drain the engine oil from the oil pan. The oil in the cooler remains but the rest of the engine is now empty again. Add the required 2 3/4 quarts, mark the dipstick with the full oil level and the engine is ready and waiting to be run.

      Picture three shows the engine installation plan pages marked off.  There are only one and a half boxes remaining on the chart, but I need to add one of my own.  ELT mount / baggage area. When I complete the half box for the gear leg fairings and my own added box.  I can mark off the airframe complete box.
