The support piece attaches to the glare shield.  It has a mounting ball attached at one end. It holds the heavy GPS unit solidly in place without any buckling or warping of the glare shield.  The unit is powered in the last picture with an external battery hookup.  I was figuring out where the power and antenna wires would route.
